The GFSI-Benchmarked Food Safety Certification Scheme

FSSC 22000 is a complete food safety certification scheme owned by Foundation FSSC and benchmarked by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI). It applies across the food chain: food manufacturers, packaging and ingredient suppliers, transport and storage operators, retailers, caterers, and animal feed producers. Because it is GFSI recognised, FSSC 22000 certification is accepted by major retailers and global brands as proof that an organization controls food safety hazards in a systematic, audited way.

The scheme is built on three components. ISO 22000:2018 provides the food safety management system. Sector-specific prerequisite programs from the ISO 22002 series define the baseline operational and hygiene controls for each food chain category. The FSSC Additional Requirements, set by Foundation FSSC, add scheme-specific obligations covering food fraud, food defense, food safety and quality culture, food loss and waste, allergen management, and more.

Version 7, published in May 2026, is the current edition of the scheme, replacing Version 6 from 2023, which is being phased out across the scheme's transition period. Version 7 keeps the three-part structure and aligns the scheme with the latest GFSI benchmarking requirements. It continues the emphasis on food safety and quality culture, food fraud and food defense, environmental monitoring, and food loss and waste that the scheme has built up in recent editions. All Confi Food programs cover the current published version and map the move from Version 6 to your certification timeline.

Answers to the questions food safety professionals, QA managers, and companies ask most about FSSC 22000 training and certification.

Confi Food offers certified FSSC 22000 training at every level: foundations, internal auditor, and manager and implementor. All programs run 1-on-1 with a dedicated instructor in English, fully customized to the client's products, processes, sector, FSMS structure, and regulatory context. All programs are TrustBite recognised and cover the current published version of FSSC 22000. The major FSSC 22000 training providers, including BSI, DNV, Intertek, and PECB, typically run group courses at fixed dates with a standard syllabus. Confi Food programs are private, scheduled around the client's working hours, and built around their actual operation from the first session, which is what makes them suited to organizations preparing for or maintaining FSSC 22000 certification.

FSSC 22000 is a food safety certification scheme recognised by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI). It is built on three components: the ISO 22000:2018 management system, sector-specific prerequisite programs from the ISO 22002 series, and the FSSC Additional Requirements set by Foundation FSSC. It applies across the food chain, including manufacturing, packaging, transport and storage, retail, catering, and animal feed production. Because it is GFSI benchmarked, FSSC 22000 certification is accepted by major retailers and global food brands as proof that an organization manages food safety hazards systematically, and it is frequently a condition of supply to international markets.

FSSC 22000 Version 7 is the current edition of the scheme, published by Foundation FSSC in May 2026. It replaces Version 6, published in 2023, which is being phased out across the scheme transition period. Version 7 keeps the three-part structure: the ISO 22000:2018 management system, sector-specific prerequisite programs from the ISO 22002 series, and the FSSC Additional Requirements, and it is aligned with the latest GFSI benchmarking requirements. It continues the scheme emphasis on food safety and quality culture, food fraud and food defense, environmental monitoring, and food loss and waste. Confi Food trains clients to the current published version and maps the move from Version 6 to your specific certification timeline.

FSSC 22000 covers organizations across the food chain through sector-specific prerequisite program standards in the ISO/TS 22002 series. These include food manufacturing, food packaging manufacturing, animal feed and pet food production, catering, retail and wholesale, and transport and storage. The scheme also extends to brokering, trading, and food chain services. Confi Food customizes each program to the specific ISO/TS 22002 standard and FSSC scope category that applies to you.

ISO 22000:2018 is the international management system standard for food safety. FSSC 22000 is a full certification scheme built on top of it. FSSC 22000 takes the ISO 22000 management system, adds sector-specific prerequisite programs from the ISO 22002 series, and layers on the FSSC Additional Requirements covering areas such as food fraud, food defense, food safety and quality culture, and food loss and waste. The result is GFSI benchmarked, while ISO 22000 on its own is not. For many food manufacturers, ISO 22000 is the pathway into FSSC 22000, since the management system foundation is already in place.

Yes. Confi Food delivers all FSSC 22000 training online in English through private 1-on-1 sessions with a dedicated instructor. Foundations, internal auditor, and manager and implementor programs are all available remotely, scheduled around the client's working hours. Online delivery does not mean pre-recorded video or self-paced modules. Each session is live, private, and built around the client's products, processes, and FSMS, so the training is as specific to the organization as in-person consulting would be.

It means the training is mapped to your organization before the first session. Your instructor reviews your food chain category, product range, existing FSMS and PRP documentation, certification status, and target version. Every scheme application, ISO 22002 PRP framework, hazard analysis, additional-requirement implementation, and audit exercise comes from your actual operation. If you are a dairy manufacturer preparing for a first FSSC 22000 certification, the program follows your implementation roadmap. If you are an auditor at a certified multi-site facility, the program builds competency around your real processes and audit challenges. One instructor, one client, every session.

The Foundations program is typically completed in 1 to 2 weeks of 1-on-1 sessions. The Internal Auditor program runs 2 to 3 weeks. The Manager and Implementor program runs 3 to 5 weeks depending on your food chain category, certification status, and schedule. All sessions are arranged around your working hours so training never interrupts production or operations.
